I like your viewpoints! You have some good information here and I, too, believe that if there is software to make computer life a little easier, I’m all for it. These little programs are so helpful and do things directly without having to wend one’s way through the mazes of the big programs that then bury it somewhere in the miriad of files. Thanks for the straight talk and helpful information.

I would like to know of a good program to merge databases of family records. I have files for seven families which I would like to merge into a master record likely using the gedcom files of each.

The best thing I know for a genealogy database is Legacy Family Tree, although any genealogy database software would have a merge function. I believe the Legacy one is particularly good.

If you create a new family file in Legacy and then import each of your gedcoms into it and then run the merge function for duplicates that should do it. You might want to import the first two and merge duplicates before going on to the next one. You didn’t say if your seven families are related. If they’re not they could still exist in the same family file but as different unconnected “trees”.

I’m not really qualified to answer this in depth. It’s fairly self-explanatory but if you run into any other questions Legacy has an extensive help file as well as excellent tech support. You can do it!

Hello JL, just chanced upon your blog thru the Legacy newsletter (I’m a Legacy user in Australia).

Just wanted to say you’re doing a great service to us with your selection of program reviews and technotes – I know it’s thankless, but have a super holiday season!

    Cheers

I’m a neophyte on so many levels, particularly when it comes to my computer, and next high on the list is genealogy. I’m a real beginner when it comes to either one. So, in reading your blog, I’m thinking this is going to help me find my way around the information highway, especially when it comes to genealogy. So, many thanks for all your help. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy 2007.
