GumNotes: Add Sticky Notes Directly To Your Files

by JL Beeken on 9-24-2010

Someone is finally building it. My dream utility. A way to add sticky notes directly to files. Any kind of files, email, even web pages.

Open a file or a window, click the pink GumNotes icon in the system tray, add a note and save.

The note is immediately added to your list of notes in the upper window. The next time you open the file or window, your note will pop up from the system tray.

Right now GumNotes is in beta and it’s buggy but it’s free. For instance, if you annotate a web page, the note will pop up every time you open any web page. Or if you add a note to an email the note will pop up every time you open your email program. But, it does pretty well on individual files. Just don’t expect it to know that opening an rtf with WordPad is the same thing as opening it with Word. It does intend to go commercial eventually.

In case you’re wondering where all your notes go to, that would be

You’ll definitely want to keep a backup of that folder. You can’t import the .xml into GumNotes, but you could put it back into the folder if you had to reinstall the software.

What you’ll end up with is an entry like this for each file note:

<PlainText>Mya, first day of school</PlainText>
<ShownID />
<Keywords>IMG_4416_edited-1.jpg - Windows Picture and Fax Viewer</Keywords>
<Text>{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\deff0\deflang1033{\fonttbl{\f0\fnil\fcharset0 Microsoft Sans Serif;}}
\viewkind4\uc1\pard\f0\fs17 Mya, first day of school\par

After your eyes get used to the razzle-dazzle of xml code, all that means is photo IMG_4416_edited-1.jpg of my grand-niece, Mya, on her first day of school, as I grabbed it from an email before I forgot.

So, if you ever wanted to stop using GumNotes, you could still retrieve your notes.

Take the beta for a whirl while it’s free. They’re looking for feedback. It’s our big chance to bend the functionality toward any desired genealogical convenience. We being the great note-takers of the universe.

Compatible with Windows only – XP, Vista, 7.
