Echofon: Twitter In Your Browser

EchofonI admit I’m not a big Twit so far. That’s what Twitter-ers are called – Twits for short. It used to mean something else.

Anyway, I’m trying. And I came across a Firefox plugin to help me. It’s called Echofon.

After you enter your Twitter login (yes, you have to sign up for an account first) on the Options page, Echofon puts a little blue icon down at the bottom of your browser that leads to a small menu of all the Twits and their Tweets that you choose to follow. All your chosen Twits are now ever-present in your browser. All you have to do is click on the little blue circle to open or close your World of Twits.

Whenever there’s a new Tweet, it pops up by itself for a second. That’s fine if you’re only following a few Twits. It’s like a physical friend bopping into your room for a second and if you don’t say hi, they bop back out. I think this could get a little nutty if you’re following hundreds or thousands of Twits.

Checking for new Tweets happens automatically every 3-30 minutes depending on your settings. OK, imagine 300 friends bopping into your room every 30 minutes. I don’t know if this is a good thing or if the world’s gone completely mad. I’m leaning toward the latter.

You can turn this notifier off if you begin to feel in need of a straight-jacket but you might miss something that someone is talking about somewhere in the world so you’ll have to weigh that out.

Being a Twit yourself is just as easy because there’s a little box (see that box) at the bottom of the pop-up box for writing Tweets. You can also write Tweets directly to other Twits by clicking on the Send a Reply arrow. Anytime you have an interesting, or uninteresting, thought or find something on the web to share, just pop it into the box and send it off.

With one click of a button you can include the URL of the page you’re on so … honestly, there’s not a single thing to slow you down from talking all day long and getting sidetracked all over the web by all the other Twits talking. I don’t want to get too philosophical here but, at first impression, this gives me a very deep craving for silence.

On the other hand, if you want to be on the cutting edge and up to the bleeding minute, this has got to be it. Get a Twitter account, get a whole bunch of Twitter accounts, get Firefox, get Echofon, and follow all the Tweets and Twits you’re interested in. I’m going to try it for a week. Only because I can’t stand the thought of being left in the dust.

P. S. I think I may have deleted one of my followers by accident (in the stampede). If that was you, I apologize.
